It is expensive to develop for the iPhone. You must have a Mac machine. Next, you must have the right version of Mac OS. You need at least Leopard (10.5.4). I needed to upgrade mine from Tiger to Leopard and that cost $125.68 with student discount.
You can download the iPhone SDK and start development on the provided iPhone Simulator but to download software to your iPhone you need to get at least the Standard developer license and that cost $107.17 with tax. I have just paid Apple for the developer license and I will need to wait to get approval.
I am please to report that I have got the legendary "Hello World" application running on the simulator. So far, the progress is going as planned.
